Shepherds of the South Downs – their lives and times

Join us to discover the untold stories of the shepherds of the South Downs with local historian Ian Everest

Central to farming on the South Downs in past centuries, and to the economy of the Exceat area , were the tens of thousands of sheep that grazed on the fine download turf. The shepherds, who spent their solitary lives caring for their flocks, were a familiar part of the local countryside. In this fully illustrated talk, Ian will tell the fascinating stories of these hard -working characters and their dedication to their flocks. In a long-gone way of life, you’ll hear about the many tasks carried out by the shepherds during the year – folding, lambing, sheep washing, dipping, and attending the sheep fairs – all illustrated with locally taken photos including some of the Seven Sisters Country Park.
